Thomas Smith fought in Texas War for Independence in, 1836, under James W. Fannin at Refugio Mission. He was captured at Goliad, and was one of a handful who were spared to repair guns for the Mexican Army. Thomas escaped his Mexican captures during Battle of San Jacinto.
He would eventually own a blacksmith shop, hotel and livery stable in Richmond, Texas. He became Sheriff of Fort Bend County, serving from 1853-1857. He married twice and fathered eight children. Thomas Smith died on February 16, 1890 and was buried in Richmond, Texas.
