"George Roy James was born March 11, 1904 in Atlanta, Georgia, the oldest of nine children of George James and Dora Smith. His father was a Methodist Minister who has retired and both parents are now living in Duncan, South Carolina. He had three brothers and five sisters, with on brother having proceeded him in death. He is father of eight children and one step-son, all still living. He also has eleven grandchildren. He was very proud of his children who are Beulah May Saulsbury, George Roy James, Jr., Marjorie Nell Bates and Geraldine Lou Orlando. He was equally proud of his step-son, Ernest Bennett, and his children, Ricky Dale, David Lee, Katherine Grace and Judy Ann from his marriage to Thelma Katherine Danvers on February 20, 1947, who also survives him. He joined the Navy shortly after World War I at the age of 15 and received an Honorable Discharge at the end of his 2 year enlistment. He enjoyed being a wrestler even at this young age, while in the service of his country and it was there he received his first exposure to electricity and radio and radio telephone. His profession was Master Machinist and Radio technician. During World War II he made many prototype pieces of defense equipment. When he made anything it was certainly a work of art, doing nothing part way. He was quite a perfectionist, and very quick in doing things that he was asked to do, not like most of us who procrastinate. One of his beliefs, which he lived by, was to always give more to an employer than he was paid for. Until coming to Arizona in 1948 he lived in California in the Los Angeles area. His family lived at the Johnson Mine and Dragoon before moving to St. David in October 1960. He loved this community and has expressed his opinion that it is the best place in the world to live and he has traveled throughout much of the world. He had many hobbies, being expert at most of them. Some of his hobbies were model airplanes, model railroading, baking, carpentry, fishing, hunting, electricity, radio, mining and above all, gardening and nature. One of his greatest delights was cooking for his family and others he loved. His family will always remember the fine meals, coconut rolls, cinnamon rolls and other good things that he enjoyed preparing for them. He passed away at the age of 63 because of heart failure while in his home on Tuesday evening, June 13, 1967 at 8:55 P.M., shortly after preparing supper for his family. He is being buried at Cochise Gardens of Rest, where he has planted all of the trees, grass, shrubbery and roses, where he has developed and grown, since he became the first care taker there in 1961."
