Rev. James Morrison married Frances Brown, the daughter of Rev. Samuel and Mary Moore Brown (the Indian "Captive of Abb's Valley"). He was a Pastor in New Providence Church for 28 years.

There is a long article written about him in the reprint on 22 Oct 1902 Lexington Gazette by former editor Judge James T. Patton. It was originally in the 30 Apr 1875 issue. He was born in Cabarras Co., NC. It says James Morrison graduated from the University of N.C. He was licensed to preach by the Orange Presbytery in North Carolina on 5 Apr 1817 and received by the Lexington Presbytery on 22 Apr 1819. He served 38 years at New Providence from 1819 to 1857. He died at his daughter, Mrs. Bondurant's home, in Eastern Virginia. His body was brought to his former home in Rockbridge county and lies buried in the New Providence cemetery.
