Elhanan was the eldest son of Elhanan Winchester and Mary Taylor of Brookline (Muddy River) and Roxbury. He was married three times. He had six sons by his second wife, Sarah Belcher. They include Elhanan, Samuel, David and Jonathan (twins), Silas, and Benjamin. Sarah died in 1760 in Brookline three days following the birth of Benjamin.
He had ten children by his third wife Lydia Jewett. His last years were spent in the Harvard Shaker Village where he died in 1810. He is buried in the Shaker Burying Ground at Harvard.
