Simril's moved from Columbia, South Carolina to Newnan, Georgia in 1853. "Ellen's people besought her to remain with them-they would finance her farming interests, but with a heroic courage and independence which characterized her useful and beautiful life, she chose to share hardships with her husband rather than live in comfort on the bounty of even beloved relatives".

In Memoriam

"The memory of the just is blessed."

MRS. ELLEN JANE SIMRIL was born in York District, South Carolina, and died in Newnan, Ga. March 7th, in the 65th year of age. It is hard to realize that she, who walked before us only one week ago, in the buoyancy of health and sprite, ministering to the comfort of her own home-circle, or watching beside the couch of languishing pain, has passed from us forever. But the sad truth forces itself upon us, and we are compelled to say - "Thy will be done."

MRS. SIMRIL was, in many respects an extraordinary person. Endowed by nature with a strong intellect, and an unconquerable energy, she surmounted the adversities of life with a heroism that was indeed beautiful to see. Years ago, she was left a widow, with three little children depending on her alone for support and education, yet she never repined at her lot, but with the industry, economy, and confidence of a true woman reared them to years of maturity and to a full consciousness of her worth as a mother - they now "rise up and call her blessed."

Her standard of rectitude was high, and the leniency that covered up the willful shortcomings of individuals, found but little sympathy in her bosom, while charity, in its true sense, was one of her crowning virtues. She lived the religion she professed, being a devoted member of the Presbyterian church. And while she loved her own, her great heart went out in tender affection to toward God's people of every denomination. As a mother, friend, and christian, we mourn her loss, but not without hope, for we are fully assured that she has entered into that rest "that remaineth for the people of God."
