John's parents were Stephen and Mary (Clothier) Thomas. He moved to North Carolina and in 1766 is listed in land records of Anson County. John married a Quaker, Molly Clark, before June 3, 1769. John then became a Quaker in 1782. Beginning in 1811, John, his wife and children gradually moved to Wayne County, Indiana. The move probably had to do with the family's aversion to slavery.
UPDATE by Joan: Meeting minutes for Piney Grove lists John's date of birth as 6th month of 1743. Quakers wrote the number of the month instead of the Pagan name. Until 1752, British Colonies used the Julian Calendar and March was the first month of each year -thus John's birth would have been in August of 1743. Since John's parents were Quaker, he was a Birthright Quaker. In 1782, the John Thomas family joined New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina. They moved from Deep River Monthly Meeting, also in Guilford County, NC, to Marlboro County, South Carolina in 1794.
