William was the son of Stephen Thomas and his wife, Mary Clothier.

William married Hannah Pratt, daughter of William Pratt. Talbot Co., Maryland between 1760 & 1762.

1774-1775 - Represented Anson County, North Carolina at the State Assembly. (In 1779, the part of Anson County where William lived, became Richmond County).

1776 - Patriot in Revolutionary War.

1788 - Born into Quaker family and left the faith at some point. William was Trustee in deed for Presbyterian School. Richmond Co., NC

Married 2nd Rachel Roe in Anson Co., NC, between Dec 1788 & Dec 1789.

1790 - Residence was Richmond Co., NC

1800 Aug 19 - "Died lately in Richmond County in this state, much lamented, William Thomas, Esq., Astronomer". from "Raleigh Minerva"

1800 Oct - William's will was probated.

ROBERT CLOTHIER (ca. 1680-1717) - born in Queens County, Maryland, son of Lewis Clothier and Susanna Knap.
JANE KEMP (1687-1723) - Married outside the Quaker faith, but her husband probably became a Quaker, as their children were all Quakers. After Robert's death Jane married her daughter, Mary's father-in-law, Tristram Thomas.

PATERNAL GRANDPARENTS:
TRISTRAM THOMAS (ca. 1664-1746)- Born in England, came to America as a toddler. After Judith's death, he married his son's mother-in-law, Jane Kemp.
JUDITH CLAYLAND (ca. 1674-1720) - Married Tristram about 1699.
