=====================

Francis Thomas, a. son of John Thomas, from South Carolina. to New Garden in 1811.

He not only encountered the unavoidable hardships of pioneer life in general, and among others, that of going on horseback thirty miles to get breadstuffs, but was obliged, with others, to flee for safety during the Indian troubles. Notwithstanding his fear of attacks from Indians, he held his peace principles too dear not to be preserved at any hazard, even of life. He took the lock from his gun, and hid the gun at a distance from his house, lest, in case of an attack, he might be tempted to harm the Indians.

Farming was his favorite and chosen occupation. But, being naturally ingenious, he turned his hand occasionally to the different trades of carpenter, cabinet-maker, cooper, shoemaker, and blacksmith.

He made an early profession of religion; and his well-known honesty and love of peace gave him great influence as a peacemaker in the church and community. He was liberal and charitable; and was during life a member of the society of Friends.

He was married to Lydia Woodward, and had eight children: 1. Nelly, who was married, first, to Abira Ballard; second, to Eli Hadley, and lives in Clinton Co. 2. Luke, to Mildred Fulghum. 3. Sarah, to Joseph Hubbard, and died here; he lives in Missouri. 4. Absehit, to Rollin Green; settled in Clinton Co., and died in 1871. 5. John, to Smithy Newsom, and lives at Azalia, Ind. 6. Francis W., to Rebecca Corbitt, and lives in Henry Co. 7. Lydia, to Joseph B. Mills, and died in Hamilton Co.; he resides at Xenia, Ind.. 8. Isaac, to Mahala Hadley, 9. Clarkson, to Sarah Jane Pitts, and lives on the homestead.

For a very long time family researchers believed his parents, Quakers John and Molly (Clark) Thomas, lived in South Carolina. This family was involved with Pee Dee Preparative Meeting and we now have proof Pee Dee PM was located near Cordova in Richmond County, North Carolina instead of someplace in South Carolina. Records of the North Carolina Counties of Orange, Anson/Richmond, and Guilford show John and his family living in NC until 1802 when the parents finally moved to Marlboro County, South Carolina and became members of Piney Grove Monthly Meeting.

On 29 Feb 1812, Whitewater Monthly Meeting of Wayne Co., Indiana received Francis Thomas, wife Lydia and children Mary & Luke from Contentnea Monthly Meeting of Wayne County, NC. The family also had been living in Highland County, Ohio and were members of Fairfield MM. We don't know when the family moved to New Garden, Wayne, Indiana but on 24 Aug 1816, minutes recorded "Francis Thomas to care for the graveyard."
