Springfield, Va. - Richard E. Corthell Jr., 23, of Springfield, Va., formerly of Springfield, Ga., died Monday at his home after a long illness.

The Atlanta native had lived in Virginia for 10 years and was a member of the Springfield United Methodist Church. He was a 1973 graduate of the University of Virginia and had received a number of national honors in science.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Corthell Sr. of Springfield, Va.; a sister, Miss Cindee Corthell of Springfield, Va.; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon S. Corthell of Ashland, Ore.; and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at Demaine Funeral Home in Virginia. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Brooklet City Cemetery. Leslie Thompson Funeral Home of Springfield, Ga., is in charge.
