Willard Richards Smith, 87, church and civic worker, died of natural causes Monday at home.
Mr. Smith retired as vice president of Zions' Savings Bank and Trust Co. in 1956. He had previously served as a member of the board of directors. He had also served as president of the board of directors of Heber J. Grant and Co. He was once president of the Great Salt Lake Council, Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mr. Smith served as president of the Salt Lake Temple from 1961 to 1964. Other church capacities included 14 years as high councilman and patriarch in the Ensign LDS Stake. He served a 32 month mission to Norway. He was a former member of the Salt Lake Rotary Club and received the "Red Feather" citation in 1953 for services rendered to the Community Chest.
Mr. Smith was born Nov. 20, 1884, in Salt Lake City, a son of Joseph F. and Sarah Ellen Richards Smith. He married Florence Grant Feb. 3, 1910, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He is survived by his widow sons, daughters, Willard G., Richards G., Briant G., Howard G., Paul G., Mrs. Florence Jacobsen, all Salt Lake City; Mrs. Sarah Tanner, Los Angeles; 27 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; brothers, sisters, Fielding K., Silas S., Samuel S., Mrs. Emily S. Walker, Mrs. Rachel S. Taylor, Mrs, Edith S. Patrick, Mrs. Marjorie S. Brown, Mrs. Asenath S. Conklin, Mrs. Martha S. Jensen, Mrs. Marjorie C. Brown, all Salt Lake City.
Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
