Capt., Co. H, 7th Ky Vol Cav, Union, Civil War.

Service Record: Enlisted as a 1SGT on August 4, 1862 at Nashville, Davidson Co., TN. Promoted to Full 1LT on April 20, 1863. Enlisted in Company H, 7th Ky Cav, Union, on June 19, 1863. Promoted to Full Captain on June 19, 1863. Mustered out on July 10, 1865 at Edgefield, TN.

Notes:
•Capt. Thornton survived the Civil War, but disappeared in records, known to me, after his muster out date-with the exception of the order for his military headstone. The supplier of the headstone contracted with the government in 1879, but many veterans' headstones were placed on their graves years after their death. I have left his date of death as "Unknown".

•Co. H of the 7 Ky. Vol. Cav. was recruited heavily from Garrard County. There is a Jepthey Thornton b. 1827, Ky. in the 1850 census of that county. He is living in the household of John and Eliza Thornton, who are the correct age to be his parents.

•Jeptha Thornton is associated with the Nicholas Schooler family in some way. He was present in that household in the 1860 census of Madison County and enumerated as b. 1830, Ky. He is also interred in the same cemetery as the Schooler family. Jeptha's occupation was listed as a school teacher in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Could he simply have been boarding in the Schooler home or is there a familial connection? Research is ongoing.
