Anna Eliza Miles was a daughter of Stephen Godbold Miles (1857-1940), mayor of Marion, SC, and his wife Sarah J. Ellerbe (1856-1937). On 20 December 1905, she married James Rowland Montgomery (1881-1956), also of Marion, SC. They moved to Camden, Kershaw County, SC in the 1920s.

Anna and James had five sons: Stephen Miles Montgomery (1906-1987, m. Annie), James Roland Montgomery, Jr. (1908-1975), James Douglas Montgomery (1909-1990, m. Neva Louise Shannon), William Francis "Frank" Montgomery (1912-1983, m. Nell Lindsay Goodale) and Samuel Everette Montgomery (1917-1979, m. Rachel Wilson Stearns).
