Daughter of William and Sarah Haselden Ellerbe, wife of Stephen Godbold Miles.

MARION - Mrs. Stephen G. Miles, 81, died at her home in Wahee, Friday evening at 10:45 o'clock, after an illness of several weeks, following a stroke of paralysis. Weakened by her illness this beloved woman passed away peacefully, as loved ones and physicians tenderly ministered to her.

A woman of strong character, Mrs. Miles lived up to the best traditions of southern womanhood, and as daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend and church member, held to the highest standards and so lived that death, for her, had no sting. She was a modest but highly intelligent woman, and in her quiet way was a force for good in he community.

A daughter of the late Captain William S. Ellerbe, deceased was a member of one of old Marion County's largest and most influential families. She was born at the old Ellerbe home, near Sellers, on September 11, 1856, and with a number of brothers and sisters, spent her girlhood in the healthy surroundings of her large and happy country home. One brother, William H. Ellerbe, whose son Earl R. Ellerbe, is now a highly respected citizen of Marion, became Governor of SC, and another, J. Edward Ellerbe, whose widow, Mrs. Nellie C. Ellerbe, is the beloved librarian at Marion Public Library, served a number of terms as Congressman from the Sixth District of SC.

Almost 60 years ago, Sarah married Stephen G. Miles, a young Marion farmer-business man, and with him she lived happily for more than half a century. Every day of her married life she was an inspiration to her husband and her children, and at her death they called her blessed.

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday morning at 11 o'clock by Dr. J. Emerson Ford. Commitment was made in the Shiloh Church Cemetery.

In addition to her husband, S. G. Miles, who is chairman of the Marion County Board of Commissioners, Mrs. Miles is survived by the following children, Miss Nita Miles of Marion, Mrs. J. R. Montgomery of Camden, Mrs. Richard E. Smith of Marion, Will F. Miles of Marion, Mrs. J. W. Howard of Florence, Sam F. Miles of Marion and Mrs. Theo Miles Friar of Florence; two sisters, Mrs. Sara E. Miles of Little River and Miss Eva Ellerbe of Columbia; 14 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
