John Herbert "Red" Chittum, 79, of Buena Vista died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1988, at the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. He was born April 17, 1909 in Rockbridge County, a son of the late James Chittum and Elizabeth Hostetter Chittum. He is survived by his wife, Buelah George Chittum; one daughter, Mrs. Beatrice C. Conner of Clifton Forge, four sons, Herbert E. Chittum and Saford W. Chittum, both of Buena Vista, Stanley O. Chittum of Middlebrook and Hershel L. Chittum of Raphine; four brothers, James Chittum and Sam Chittum, both of Baltimore, and Grover L. Chittum and Roy J. Chittum, both of Buena Vista; three sisters, Mrs. Laurabell Hartless of Buena Vista, Mrs. Florence McKinney and Mrs. Ellen Gennettia, both of Baltimore; 17 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Friday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Dean Staton at Lomax Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Spring Valley Cemetery.
