Janet Cowan County Clerk
Janet Burton Cowan passed peacefully into the arms of heaven on January 7, 2004 Her death was a result of a stroke.
She was born on March 7, 1916 in Talmage, Utah to Austin Garr Burton and Leonora McMillan Burton. She was raised in Talmage and attended school in Roosevelt.
She also attended BYU. She worked much of her adult life for Duchesne County Clerks Office. She was elected to four terms as the County Clerk proving that it is possible for some Democrats to get into heaven. She was active in the state county officers organization and served on several leadership positions.
While living in Duchesne she met and married Howard Mitchell Cowan. They raised their family on a ranch East of Duchesne. She was his help-mate and partner. They were able to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.
Janet's life was one of devotion and service to the church and family. She held numerous positions in the Mutual, Relief Society and Sunday School. She took great pride and joy in doing her callings to the best of her ability. She worked in a calling doing genealogy extraction work, the joy of her life was being called to be a Temple Worker. She served for several years at the Provo temple. When the Temple was built in Vernal she accepted a call to do ordinance work there which she fulfilled until her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Mac, Ellis, Leon, and Lawrence and her sister Virginia. Her husband and son Keith were waiting for her.
She is survived by her children Burton H. (Nancy), Barbara (Richard) Owen, JoAnn Cowan, Scott J. (Ellen) Cowan. She delighted in cooking bread and cookies for her eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and brother Paul G. Burton (Spanish Fork, UT) and sister Anna Kenison (Payson, UT).
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 10, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at the Duchesne 1st Ward, 130 South 300 East. Friends may call Friday evening from 6 - 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services at the church.
Burial, Duchesne City Cemetery under direction of Hullinger Mortuary.
