Artie was born 17 May 1897 in Texas, probably in Hamilton County as her parents married there in 1896 and were there at the time of the 1900 census.

John William McKay, his wife Rhetta McKay, his mother Sarah Sophronia McKay and his siblings Lomie, Ida, Tom and Zedie are listed in the 1900 census, enumerated in June. Rhetta is said to have no children though she would have had Artie and Homer by this time.

McKay JW head 38 farmer rents farm, Rhetta wife 29 seven children all living, Artie 12, Homer 11, Charlie 9, William 7, Tressa 5, Nola 3, Alpha 1. Rhetta is recorded as having no occupation. Artie, Homer and Charles laborers on home farm. John was born in Alabama, others in Texas.

Artie married Jurd William Young (1891-1976) 20 September 1914 in Fisher Co TX (Texas Marriage Index). Jurd was born the son of Walter Whitman Young (1850-1922) and Mary Jane Osborne (1859-1917) 29 Nov 1891 in Texas.

Jurd registered for the WWI draft 5 June 1917 at Tahoka Texas, giving his address as Post TX. He claims an exemption as he has a wife and child. Tall, blue eyes, brown hair.

Alta's obituary (Lubbock Evening Journal, 26 Mar 1984) mentions her ten surviving sisters including 'Artie Young, Tressie Thompson, Maudie Dobbs, all of Post.' The widowed sisters lived on Two Draw Lake in Post, Garza, Texas. Grandmother had her own house. Artie and Tressie may have shared a home. I visited them there about 1979 with my son John.
