Emily Bean was born in the Cherokee Indian Reservation in Okla., the firstborn of her siblings. Her grandparents had just endured the "Trail of Tears" from the Smoky Mountains of Tenn. to the plains of Okla. Emily's father, John Ellis Bean, was a white man married to a part Cherokee woman, Henrietta Danningburg Bean. After Emily was born, they would move to Rusk Co. Tx. where John's older brother, Starr, was living with his wife and family. In Rusk Co. (around the Kilgore area), they would have Jack Starr, Julia, Mary Ann, Nathaniel B., Ruth, Carlos and Grover.
Emily would grow up and marry George P. Rowland. No children were born to this union. Emily is buried in the Kilgore City Cemetery.
