Proud Confederate Soldier
John Ellis Bean was the son of Jack Bean and Ruth Starr Bean. Ruth Starr was of mixed Cherokee Indian Blood, and as such was a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Jack Bean was a white man. The Cherokees were ordered out of the Smoky Mountain area by the then President of the United States in 1838, Andrew Jackson. Jacksons successor, Martin Van Buren, sent General Winfield Scott with a portion of the United States army, and forcibly drove the Indians out. While Jack Bean, being a white man, was entitled to remain in Tenn. with his wife, they chose to make the trek with Ruth's people to the Indian Nation, now Oklahoma. This journey is referred to as "The Trail of Tears". John Ellis Bean, one of a family of 12 children, was born in the Indian Nation in Oklahoma in 1839. John Ellis fought in the Civil War and later moved his family to Rusk Co. Tx. where his older brother, Starr, was living with his family. John had married Henerietta Dannenburg (her mom was 1/2 Indian and her dad was a German immigrant). John Ellis and Henrietta had 8 children, 5 of whom lived to maturity.
