Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. in the Lexington cemetery for Mrs. Lelia C. Figgatt, wife of E. Houston Figgatt, who died at her residence 205 South Randolph Street on Friday afternoon, August 2, 1940, after a lingering illness of three years with arthritis. She was born in Lexington, the daughter of Charles H. and Rebecca Holtzman Chittum.

In early life she married E. Houston Figgatt of Lexington. Surviving are her husband and daughter Laura, her mother and the following brothers and sisters; Arthur H. of Harrisonburg, Charles of Rushville, NE, Hugh of Lexington, E. Carroll and Mrs. W. D. Payne both of Baltimore, Md. The funeral services were conducted by Dr. W. A. Wright of the Methodist church in the absence of Mr. J. H. Cosby of the Manly Memorial Baptist Church. The active pallbearers were; Messers Frank Brown, W. L. Hess, O. T. Engleman, Walter Bingham, W. R. McCoy and C. C. Hickman. Relatives attending from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Payne, Mr. and Mrs. E. Carroll Chittum all of Baltimore, Md. Mr and Mrs. A. H. Chittum and family, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hoover all of Harrisonburg; Mrs. Lilian L. Rutherford, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Beckwith, Mr. Charles Beckwith, Mrs. Mary D. Brooks, Mr. John H. Deaver, Mr. Harry Coleman, Mr and Mrs Harry Deaton, Mrs. Lean Dull Thrasher, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Akers, Mr. and Mrs. Emory Wilbourn, Mrs. Maggie Dull Crute all of Roanoke; Mrs. C. K. Newman of Fairfield; Mrs. Laura Cupp of Raphine. Others attending were; Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Leech and Mrs. A. E. Smith of Buena Vista. A large number of relatives and friends from the town and county were also present.
