Obituary for Rexley Hukill reads:
Rexley Hukill a day call boy for the Frisco and only son of J.T. Hukill met death Saturday evening about 6 o' clock by a sad accident. Rexley in company with some more boys had been down to the railroad dam on Horse Creek to take a swim. Returning to town through the railroad yards, Rexley caught a ride on a string of cars that was being switched. He was holding on to the lower hand holds when his body swung out when he hit a low switch stand, throwing him directly under the wheels. The wheels passed over the upper portion of the body, severing his head from his shoulders. Death was instantaneous. The cars were stopped almost at once and the body was taken from under them and taken to town and prepared for burial.
The funeral occurred Sunday at 6:30 p.m. services being held at the family residence on Main street.
Rev. Linton, the Presbyterian minister at Miami had charge of the services, which were very largely attended. The remains were laid to rest in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Rexley Lewis Hukill was the only child of John T. and Adalaide Hukill who was born and raised in Afton. He attended the public schools and was a very apt and bright scholar. He would have been 18 yrs of age the 24th of July had he lived. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and a steady, industrious boy. His mother died about three years ago. The sad accident cast a gloom over the entire community and the utmost sympathy is extended to his bereaved father. This info is from the Afton American dated July 11, 1918.
