Rochelle, IL, Per the 1908 Declaration for Pension application started as a Private. The clerk indicated it joining in Roshell was incorrect but Rochelle is near Peter's home. Was appointed Sergeant of John Nelson Company H, 92nd regiment of Illinois Volunteers. Muster Roll dated Sept. 4, 1862 states they were in Rockford, IL. It stated he joined for 3 years from Lane on August 6, 1862. Paid a bounty of $25 and premium of $2. From other muster rolls: On Sept. 1, 1862 appointed 4th Sergeant. On the November-December Muster stated was sick in hospital in Danville, KY. 92nd Illinois Infantry became 92nd Illinois Mounted Infantry July 10, 1863. He became 3rd Sergeant around this time. Around June-July 1864 he became 2nd Sergeant. Rolls state he was taken prisoner on either April 13 or 14th, 1865 after Lee had surrendered on April 3, 1865. Was released on May 1, 1865.
The 92nd had 5 companies. In September 1863, as part of the Army of the Cumberland, it participated in the battle of Chickamauga. It was with Sherman in his march to the sea and the capture of Atlanta and Savannah, GA. Continued fighting through the Carolinas. 92nd participated in more than 60 battles and skirmishes.

Andrew Co., MO, Physician's Affidavit: E.M. Ward of Rosendale states: I have been acquainted with claimant for about fourteen years. I treated him for complete fracture of left leg in December 1881, said fracture preventing him from manual labor ? ? and does to a great extent yet.

Simerly, age 52 of Fillmore, Andrew Co., MO stated " That I have known the Claimant Peter Kershaw for six or seven years and know that he is unable to do much hard manual labor by being crippled up in his legs. Said claimant lives just across the street from me. and O see him nearly every day. and make the above statement from personal acquaintance with him.

Wilkerson, age 44 of Fillmore, Andrew Co., MO stated " That I have been well and personally acquainted with Peter Kershaw for 10 years and that about the year 1881 the said Peter Kershaw lived about 1 1/4 miles from my residence and during that time I know of him being badly crippled in the left leg by the kick of a horse and was confined to his bed and went on crutches for about one year, he now lives just across the street from me in Fillmore MO and I see him almost every day and know his work is such that it does not require much walking and I do not think he is able to do much manual labor.

States that at enlistment he was 5' 11", dark complected, dark haired, and had dark eyes. States he was a farmer. He was born on May 15th, 1838 at Nunda, NY. States that since leaving the service that he lived in Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois. Robert Martin and D. Alexander state they have known him for 11 and 12 years, respectively.
