Chico Record, Sunday, July 6, 1913, pg 5 col 4: Alfred Howland, Chico Pioneer, Dies in Oakland. Alfred Howland, a resident of California for thirty-two years and one of the old residents of Chico, died in Oakland July 4. He lived in this city until a few years ago, when he went to the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.H. Woods, at the bay city.

The deceased was a pattern maker and was in the employ of J.L. Mery for many years. His brother, Seth Howland, who died about twenty years ago, was one of the first settlers of Butte county, having settled on the plateau near Oroville in 1885. He was a wealthy stock raiser.

Alfred Howland was a member of a Wisconsin regiment during the Civil War and was wounded in battle. He made his home at Green Bay, Wis., at that time.

He was a member of the old Halleck post, G.A.R., in this city, but did not join it after it disbanded and reorganized about ten years ago. His military record was of the best.

The deceased is survived by two daughters and son sons. They are Mrs. W.H. Woods of Oakland, Mrs. Fisk of Green Bay, Wis., Levi Howland, head of the commercial department in Oahu College, Hawaii Islands, and Harvey Howland of Delano, California.

The remains will arrive here tonight on the El Dorado Flyer. The funeral will be held from the parlors of Bicknell & Moore on Third street at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning. Rev. C.E. Winning will officiate.
