WEBSTER CITY - Ferne T. Deakman, 91, of Webster City, died Thursday, October 14, 2010 at the Southfield Wellness Community. A Celebration of Life will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational - U.C.C. with Rev. Craig Blaufuss officiating. Burial will follow in the Graceland Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center.
Ferne Theodora Arnold, daughter of Harry and Hattie Tapper Arnold, was born April 23, 1919 on a farm near Kamrar. She was the oldest of seven children. She graduated from Kamrar Public School in 1936. On April 27, 1937, she married DeVon G. Deakman. The couple farmed in the Blairsburg, Williams and Popejoy areas before moving to Webster City in 1956. She was a homemaker and had been employed at Social Services for over 10 years and was a cook in the Webster City school system. Mr. Deakman died October 7, 1979. She continued to reside in Webster City.
Mrs. Deakman is survived by son, Wayne Deakman of Cochise, Arizona; daughter, Rose Deakman and special friend, Rich Jessen, Both of Webster City; grandchildren, Cody and Cathy Deakman of Stratford; Cally Deakman of Cochise; 4 great-grandchildren, Cord and Colby of Stratford; Casey and Cash of Cochise; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernard and Gerri Arnold of Havelock; Norman and Pat Arnold of Stratford; brother-in-law, Sterling Isvik of Jewell; sister-in-law, Becky Arnold of Oskaloosa; several nieces and nephews who were very special to her.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harold and Gary Arnold; sisters, Lillian Shields and LeNora Isvik.
Mrs. Deakman was a member of the First Congregation Church since 1938. She had served as moderator, deaconess, ushered and was on the Chancel committee for over 20 years, president of Womens Fellowship, treasurer, the committee for planning and building a new kitchen. She had been a member of the Purity Rebekah Lodge #72 since 1942, holding every office and secretary for over 30 years. She was a member of the Webster City Womens Club since 1981. Other activities included three Neighborhood clubs, Hamilton Hospital Auxiliary, helped deliver Meals On Wheels for 11 years, was active in the reading program in the Webster City Elementary schools, was a Sunday School teacher, a 4-H leader and helped with "U-Share" for many years.
