Edith Laura Elizabeth Almquist, was born December 30, 1888 on a farm in Page County, northwest of Essex. She was a daughter of Ludvig and Charlotta Johnson Bengtson.
She grew up on the farm and attended rural school, later the town school. Following her schooling, she taught in the rural schools near Essex for two years.
ON March 27, 1912, Edith was united in marriage with David Paul Almquist at Essex, Iowa. To this union two sons, Elwyn and Reynold and one daughter, Marice was born.
Following their marriage they farmed east of Essex. Her husband died in 1940. Edith remained on the farm until 1947, when she moved into the town of Essex, where she made her home the remainder of her life.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Swedish Methodist Church and was a member until the church closing. She became a member of the Essex Mission Evangelical Church in 1937, where she was a faithful member, active in the various facets of the church, especially the music department as vocalist throughout the years.
Preceding her in death besides her husband and parents, two brother, two sisters, and two granddaughters.
Surviving are her two sons, Elwyn of Essex and Reynold of Centralia, Illinois and her daughter, Marice, Mrs. Robert Young of Essex. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Luther Swanson of Shenandoah, and a number of other relatives and friends.
Edith passed away Sunday morning, December 10, 1978 at the Hand Community Hospital, Shenandoah. She was 89 years, 11 months, and 10 days of age.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, from the Evangelical Covenant Church in Essex with words of comfort by Rev. Paul Westburg.
Prviding music were Mrs. Don Hascall, organist and a quartet of Ann Kummerow, Peggy Monley, Larry Young, and Steve Young. Caring for flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Anton Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. Bernice Carlson, while Mrs. Rueben Lindburg attended the guest book.
Ushers were Leland Ackerberg and Fred Olson. Casket bearers were David Almquist, Ron Almquist, Walter Kummerow, Jr. Charles J. Peterson, Larry Young, and Steve Young.
Interment was at Essex Cemetery. Carson-Hackett Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
