JOHN RUPE, EUSTIS RESIDENT 55 YEARS, DIED SATURDAY

John W. Rupe, 84, who came to this vicintity as a Burlington employee 55 years ago, before Eustis had been concieved of and while this section was still a free range country, died last Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Rupe's death takes from the community one of the very few remaining pioneers. Coming from Iowa to Nebraska when a young man he has been a continuous resident of this vicinity, having lived on the present home site since the year he filed on his homestead.
Industrious, resourceful and determined, he was the type of man who formed many friendships in the early years of the growth of the western part of the state. Farmer and stockman, he was successful from the beginning, and came to be one of the largest land owners of the south side.
While his health has been failing in recent months he has been about his home and able to recieve company all of the time.
Mrs. Rupe died two and a half years ago.
The last service was held on Monday afternoon at the Evangelical Church, the Rev. N. Thomas officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Ernest Chambers of Cambridge.
Mrs. H. H. Zwink played the accompaniment for Mr. and Mrs. John A. Hueftle and Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Schroeder who sang "Nearer, My God to Thee", "The City Foursquare" and "Going Down the Valley."
The six sons were pall beares. Interment was made in the family lot in Eustis cemetery.
OBITUARY
John W. Rupe was born at Ottumwa , Iowa, on November 4th, 1855, departed this life at his farm home seven miles southwest of Eustis, Nebraska on February 11, 1939, at the age of eighty-three years, three months and seven days. In 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Oldenberg at Ottumwa, Iowa and a few years later they with their two children came to Nebraska and settled on a homestead in Frontier County where he made his home and upon which he died. In 1895 he passed through the experience of losing his life companion. The following year he entered again into the bond of wedlock with Miss Anna Oldenberg of Eustis, Nebraska, and they continued to fight life's battles together until August 21st, of 1936 when she passed away.
He recieved Christian Baptism under the pastorate of Rev. G. H. Stimson and during the last few weeks of his life became quite tender towards things of righteousness. He had always enjoyed good health until about six weeks ago when he suffered a light stroke of paralysis, from which he did not fully recover, death coming peacefully Saturday at 2 p.m.
Preceding him in death were also two daughters, Minnie at the age of 22 and Amy who died in infancy.
He is survived by seven sons and two daughters and one sister. Fred, Frank, Edward, Walter, Wallace, Nile and Mrs Fred Meyers of Eustis and Grover and Mrs. Brandon Wheeler of Potter, Nebraska. The sister Mrs. Kate Jaques lives in Des Moines, Iowa. Surviving also are fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
