After her mother died she and her sister (the 2 youngest girls in the family) were given to Rev. J. E. Wolfe for adoption. He did have some Timberlakes living in his household according to 1900 census but they were his daughter and son-in-law. 1900 census and Cherokee records state she was considered an orphan and given by her father to be adopted by Rev. Wolfe. Her mother was of Cherokee blood and listed in tribal records and Catherine later had her father added to the list.
