Eliza was the daughter of Frederick Shamblen and his first wife, Asenath Wickham. Eliza married Emmanuel Gilpin (1866), George Askern (1881), and John McDonald (1893). Eliza's siblings were Phebe Ann Shamblen Nichols, Nancy Jane Shamblen Forshey, Thomas Jefferson Shamblen and Emmaretta Shamblen. At the time of her death, she was living with her son, Oscar Askern, in Sioux Falls, SD.
Eliza's obituary states "She was of the rugged pioneer type of womanhood. Her struggles and battles of life were many but she preserverd in them, maintaining her vigor of health and able to do most of her own work until within the last year. Even after her fall last winter, which confined her to a wheel chair she did much of her own work in the chair."
