BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:

Joseph Laird was born to Alexander and Elizabeth (Scott) Laird in Kilmacolmn, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Kilmacolm is a very small town which, at the time of Joseph's birth, probably had not more than about 300 people in it. The first church in Kilmacolm was built around 570 A.D. and was likely of mud and wattle construction. It was replaced by a timber building and then a thirteenth century stone chapel which is now part of the present Kilmacolm Old Parish Church.

According to Colin at St. Columba Church in Kilmacolm, the Lairds were a large local family until contemporary times. In fact, there is a local 'ditty' that goes something like this:

"Laird, Lang, Scott and Holm, the chief names in Kilmacolm." Laird, Scott and Holm are all names in this particular ancestral line.

Joseph Laird and Eleanor "Ellen" Morison were married in about 1799. Their first 6 children were born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. One was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and my 3rd great grandfather, Peter Laird, was born in Clark County, Ohio. In total, 8 children lived to majority.

Their children were:

William R. Laird, b. 1800
Elizabeth Laird, b. 1802
Susan Anna Laird, b. abt 1805
James Laird, b. 1807
Alexander Laird, b. 1812
Eleanor "Ellen" Laird, b. 1814
John Ernest Laird, b. 1817
Peter Laird, b. 1821

Joseph and his family settled in Carroll County, Illinos. In the "History of Carroll County" published in 1878, it says, "Sometime previous to these last-named accessions to the Cherry Grove settlement, the father of John Laird either selected or bought a claim."

Joseph and Ellen lived on their land in Freedom, near Cherry Grove, Carroll County, until 1845, when they died within a couple weeks of one another: first Joseph and then his wife. They are buried in Wolfe Cemetery, which is located on a farm in Freedom. The inscriptions read:

"Laird, sacred to the memory of Joseph Laird who died January 5, 1845 in his 74th year"

and

"Laird, sacred to the memory of Eleanor, wife of Joseph Laird, who died January 21, 1845 in her 67th year."

Joseph and Eleanor came from sturdy Scottish stock, and their numerous descendants populate the United States from Illinois to California.
