Melvin Luther Wood, 81, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Smith Wood. Born Nov. 8, 1924, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Jake Carl Wood and the late Mary Ruth Webber Wood. He served his country 37 years with the U.S. Army during World War II, the Virginia Army National Guard and the Virginia Defense Force. He was also a member of Park View United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jake Carl Wood Jr.; and by a sister, Louise Doty.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Wood is survived by two daughters, Diane W. Kirkwood and her husband, Robert, and Carolyn Wood, both of Forest; one sister, Frances W. Godsey of Lynchburg; two grandsons, Steve Kirkwood and his wife, Jenae, of Columbia, Mo., and Scott Kirkwood and his wife, Kelly, of Lynchburg; two great-granddaughters, Abbey Kirkwood and Izzie Kirkwood; one brother-in-law, Winfrey Smith and wife, Carolyn, of Lynchburg; a close family friend, Robyn Ramsey of Forest; special caregivers, Jean Garnette and Terri Cabell-Carr; as well as many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2006, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the family home. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Park View United Methodist Church.
