Giles Knight, along with his wife, Mary English, son Joseph and sister Ann Knight sailed 31 August 1682 with William Penn's fleet of ships. They are on the ship "Society" manifest as passegers. They sailed up the Delaware River on 27 Oct 1682, docking 28 October 1682 and immediatly went to Philadelphia. Because they arrived after winter set in, a group of them lived in a cave until spring.

'A HISTORY OF THE TOWNSHIPS OF BYBERRY AND MORELAND IN PHILADELPHIA, FROM THEIR EARLIEST SETTLEMENT BY THE WHITES TO THE PRESENT TIME"
JOSEPH M MARTINDALE, M.C. PHILADELPHIA
T. ELLWOOD ZELL, 17 & 19 S. SIXTH ST. 1867

Among the emigrants who came to America with William Penn, in 1682, was Giles Knight of Gloucestershire. While in England, he married Mary, a sister of Henry English; and, at the time of their arrival in America, they had one son Joseph, who was about two years of age. During the passage across the Atlantic, Mary was very ill, so that her recovery was doubtful; yet she did recover, and lived for many years after their arrival. Her father purchased a tract of five hunderd acres in Byberry, and gave one half of it to this son, Henry English, and the other half to Giles Knight. The latter lived in a cave for six weeks after his arrival, and then constructed a wigwam, in which he resided for several months, and then erected a log house. He was very prosperous in his business, and some time afterward bought the adjoining lands of Tibby and Cross, making all together a tract of six hundred acres. The house first, being too small to accomodate his increasing family, he erected a long log-house, one story high on the Tibby Tract and opened a store for the sale of dry goods, groceries & ect.

When he went back to England for a visit, the Nailsworth Montly Meeting gave his a certificate to transfer his membership to Byberry Monthly Meeting. He had not made such arrangments before he and Mary left the first time. The entire Monthly Meeting signed the document including Henry English, Thomas,Daniel & Jonathan Knight among others.

Giles and Mary were my 8th Great Grandparents.

There is much misinformation on Giles. He never lived anywhere in this country but Maryland and Pennsylvania. Giles and his wife, Mary English, her father Joseph English and brother Henry came on the "Bistol Society" in 1682. In England he attended the Nailsworth Monthly Meeting, and the Abington MM in Philidelphia and he and Mary are buried in the Byberry MM burial Grounds in Byberry, Pennsylvania. At one point his sister Anne also came to this counrty and married Peter Vikers, son of Abraham Vickers & Mary France. His sister Joanna married Thomas Butt, another passsenger on the Birtol Society, and a brother, Thomas maried Dorthea Bonds. There were 12of the children and the rest has yet to be researched.

Today, Aug 2018 I found a tree by William C. Knight that had all my family information on it. Notes and all. He did put my name on it but...I will not be sharing any more of the 23 generations with others. Nor the information on one of the grandmothers that goes back to the Tudor family. I did the work and I feel that it is my right to put it out there. It is not that I am hard to find on the internet. I just wish I have been ask
