Velma Cassity Merritt died at her home of natural causes on June 26, 1998 at the age of 80. Her funeral was held at the Bedford LDS Church, June 30, 1998 with burial at Bedford Cemetery.
Velma Oliver Cassity Merritt was born the second child of William John and Mary Olive Neilsen Cassity in Tooele, Tooele Cl. UT on March 27, 1918. When she was three weeks old, her parents moved with her and her older brother Neil, to Osmond. her father bought a farm there. Her brothers victor first and then Winston (stillborn) wre born afterward.
She worked hard to help support the family on the farm. She attended grade school in Osmond and graduated form high school in Afton and LDS Sem8nary in 1936. She enjoyed being in the chorus in the high school operettas.
It was at a Freedom Ward dance that Velma met Erwin Merritt, from Turnerville. After a courtship of three years, they were married for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple Sept 28, 1937. Three children were born to them Colleen, Clyde and Lennis. Erwin bought a dairy farm in Turnerville and they raised their family there. Velma enjoyed being a wife, mother and homemaker. She also worked for and enjoyed serving as an election day clerk and judge.
Velma was raised in the LDS Church and was very active and enjoyed serving in positions in the various organizations in the Bedford LDS Ward; Relief Society for years, Primary and Sunday School for 38 years, and chorister and singing int he ward choir for years. she did much genealogy and temple work. she dedicated her life to her husband, children and grandchildren and church service. Her strong faith helped her to get through her many trials and ill health for years. she rejoiced at the success and happiness of her family.
They had a big celebration for their 59th wedding anniversary in 1997. They had a quiet celebration last fall for their 60th wedding anniversary.
Survivors include her husband Erwin Merritt, three children, Colleen Wright, Idaho Falls, Clyde Merritt Logan and Lennis Franklin, Afton, 22 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, brothers Neil Cassity and Victor Cassity of Osmond.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother and brother Winston.
