William John CASSITY , 96, of Afton died at Pocatello, Idaho Friday, May 13 1983 following an illness of about 15 months.
Funeral services were conducted in the Afton Third LDS Ward on Tuesday, May 17, at 12 noon with Counselor Garland Kennington conduction. Burial was in the Afton City cemetery.
William was born March 16, 1887 at Tooele Utah to William Henry CASSITY and Mary Ann WILLIAMS Cassity.
the third child in a family of nine children. While young he learned to be an expert gardener as was his father. As a young boy he enjoyed baseball and became an efficient pitcher. He received his education in Tooele and at the LDS University at Salt Lake City were he especially enjoyed English and history.
At the age of 19 he provided for the family and kept his father on a two year mission In the spring of 1911 he accepted a LDS mission call to the Southern States and labored in Ohio.
He married Mary Olive NEILSON 20 May 1914 in Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Tooele wher their son Neil and daughter Velma were born. They came to Star Valley in 1918 and purchased an 80 acre farm in Osmond where their son Victor and a stillborn baby were born.
He made many trips to Montpelier, Idaho on the old Crow Creek road to sell grain, etc., and to make payments on his farm. He worked in the canyons getting logs for lumber and firewood.
He was instrumental in helping to obtain a community pipeline for Osmond and was president and secretary of the company. He believed in farm cooperatives and assisted in organizing and served as sedaughrercretary/treasurer of the Upper Valley Swiss Cheese Association for 15 years and was office manager of the Thayne plant for three years.
Following a lingering illness his wife died June 16, 1940 and in 1944 he married Nora Harrison and in the spring of 1948 he sold his farm and moved to Afton and built a home. Nora died in 1952. He went to Tooele in 1953 and was employed at the Tooele Ordinance Depot. He married Agnes Pinigar in 1953 and they were later divorced. He married Cora Fannin in 1959 and she died Dec. 22, 1982.
He sold fresh vegetables to the local food markets for many years and won many prizes for his vegetables and flowers at the Lincoln County Fair.
He enjoyed music and was ward chorister and sang bass in quartets and in the Osmond and Afton ward choirs.
Being an active member of the LDS Church he served in many positions including a two-year stake mission, Sunday School first counselor and teacher, second counselor in the stake MIA and a teacher and drama director in the ward MIA, seventies quorum president and Star Valley Stake High councilman. In recent years he was teacher and secretary of the high priest group.
He is survived by his sons, Neil William Cassity and Victor Lionel Cassity of Osmond; daughter Mrs. Erwin (Velma) Merritt of Bedford; sister Lucille Kirk, Las Vegas, Nev.p 14 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.
