He attended schools in Star Valley. While he was in high school, he was designated as the school poet, and served on the school newspaper staff writing poetry and articles. He graduated from Star Valley High School in May 1940.
He was drafted in 1942 for WWII service in the Army, but chose, instead to enlist in the Navy at the recruiting office in Salt Lake City. He served as gun captain and boatman second class on four ships, the USS Doubleday, the USS Sacajawea, the USS Allin Con and the USS Gauntiet. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, he attended one year at BYU and then started working in Salmon, Idaho, where he met Nona Marie Fannin, they were married in 1948 and five children were born to them. They were later divorced.
