Lottie and John were married in 1894, when they were both 24. They farmed first in Kansas, then in Oklahoma before returning to Kansas. In 1921 they moved the family to southern California. John became a building carpenter and built the family home. They turned the land into a mini-farm. Lottie was very fond of her chickens. At various times they raised pigs, goats, and rabbits, as well as a broad variety of vegetables.
