Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army Supply Corps. On May 3, 1863, he volunteered to be a part of a group to take barges of supplies for the troops in the field up the river past Vicksburg, Mississippi. Under cover of darkness and through Confederate batteries, he risked his life in order to re-supply the embattled troops. For extreme bravery under fire, he was awarded the Medal of Honor with nine others in the unit.
