COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for John Dow Thompson, 78, of Cookeville, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thurs., Dec. 23, from the chapel of Dyer Funeral Home. Masonic services will be at 7 p.m. today, Wed., Dec. 22, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Crest Lawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. today, Wed., Dec. 22, at the funeral home.
Mr. Thompson died on Tues., Dec. 21, 1999, at his residence.
He was born on March 9, 1921, in Putnam County to the late Edgar and Mallie Helms Thompson. Mr. Thompson worked for 42 years for AT&T. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Sycamore Church of Christ and Masonic Lodge in Medicine Lodge, Kan.
His family includes his wife, Frances Feblene Young Pippin Thompson; five daughters, Marsha Thompson of Brewster, N.Y., Pam Brown and Rhonda Nelson, both of Boone, Iowa, Sonya Willis of Jefferson, Iowa, and Brenda Porthwood of Neih, Iowa; two sons, Gerry Thompson of Cookeville and Don Thompson of Long Beach, Calif.; four stepchildren, James and Donald Young and Debbie Rector, all of Cookeville, and Kathy Wentworth of Hazel Park, Mich.; two brothers, E.H. Thompson of Florida, and Robert Thompson of California; a sister, Tommie Hargis of Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Pippin Thompson; six sisters, Vera Smallwood, Ruth Qualls, Myrtle Marlow, Betty Qualls, Modena Bryant and Edith Thompson; and three brothers, Odell, Everett and Frank (Poochie) Thompson.
Bro. Johnny Fox will officiate at the services.
