John was fatally shot when his business in Johnsburg was being robbed.

From the Austin Daily Herald, Austin, MN Monday October 22, 1934 Front Page

A bandit who coolly murdered John S. Freund to rob his general store at Johnsburg of only $20 in cash and two cartons of cigarettes Saturday night was the objective of an intensive search today by authorities.

Mr. Freund, fifty-nine years old, who was well known throughout this section of the state, was dropped with a bullet through his body when three bandits robbed his store at 9:10 o'clock Saturday night.

The only witness of the slaying was John J. Krebsbach, Johnsburg, who was in the rear of the store listening to the radio when the holdup men entered. One of the bandits remained near the car parked north of the store while his two companions performed the holdup.

"Mr. Freund was sweeping the store and was standing near some flour sacks about in the middle of the store when the two bandits came in. The robbers pulled guns, Mr. Freund moved toward the side-door that leads from the store to the house where his son, Isadore, lives. (The house adjoins the store.)

"Mr. Freund was excited. I am sure he went toward the door to get his son to open the safe for the bandits. I know he would have given the bandits all the money he had.

"When he put his hand to the door the smaller of the two bandits pulled him back, then struck him over the head with a revolver. Mr. Freund was falling when he called out, Isadore," said Mr. Krebsbach.

As the store proprietor called out the name of his son, the smaller bandit said to his companion: "Aw----plug him." The tall man fired one shot. Mr. Freund was bent over, and apparently was falling from the blows struck on his head when he was hit by the bullet. With a groan, he dropped to the floor dead. The bullet penetrated the right side of his neck, moved down through his body and came out at the ribs near the heart on his left side. As it left the body, the bullet ricocheted, struck the edge of an ice box, hit the floor, bounded against the safe and finally lodged in the wall.

The sound of the shot was heard by Isadore in the house. He moved toward the door and was about to enter the store. One of the bandits heard him and called out. "You better stay there."

"Your pa's shot." Mr. Krebsbach called to Isadore who entered the store. The two men immediately telephoned Sheriff Ira Syck.

Mr. Freund's body was taken to Stacyville, Iowa, where an autopsy was performed yesterday afternoon by Dr. John F. Noble of St. Paul who was assisted by Coroner B. J. Cronwell of Austin. The autopsy showed that the bullet injured the spinal cord and shattered two ribs as it passed through the body. A coroner's inquest will be held with the jury to be drawn tomorrow.

John Freund was born on July 20, 1875, near Meyer, Iowa. He had a gift of making friends and was well known throughout this section of the state. His father started the general store at Johnsburg and it was managed by John Freund and his brothers. John Freund became sole owner of the store in 1918. On May 25, 1899, he married Catherine Mullenbach. His wife passed away on October 16, 1932. Mr. Freund is survived by a brother, Fred, who lives in Austin, and three children, Martha and Isadore, of Johnsburg, and Mrs. Leonard Smith of Austin.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the St. John's Catholic Church in Johnsburg.
