John Butler was born in Belper, Derbyshire, England on September 9, 1816 to Edward and Ellen Butler. He and his father were butchers. He married Catherine Sarah Bridges (1812-1867) on September 28, 1840 in nearby Derby at St. Alkmund's Church. Together they had the following children, all born in Belper:

The women of this family all died early in Derbyshire and the men all emigrated to Utah, traveling separately. John Butler (the senior) was the first to arrive in 1866. His son, William, was the second to leave England, arriving in New York on May 20, 1872, at the age of 21. John E Butler (the junior) arrived in NY on January 18, 1881 .
