George Veenker was assistant football coach at the University of Michigan as well as head basketball coach in the 1920s. He was hired by Iowa State University in the early thirties to coach football where he reinstated the great Iowa-Iowa State rivalry. He was athletic director and oversaw the design of the golf course. When he retired in 1938 the course was renamed the Veenker Memorial Golf Course.
