Mary Sarah Franklin was one of ten children born to Samuel B. Franklin (1854-1909) and Sarah V. Spangler (1855-1893). She was born in Indiana, possibly in Fayette County, where the family resided in 1880. While a young girl, Mary moved with her family to Kansas and Colorado, following other Franklin family members. Her mother Sarah died in Abbott, Colorado in 1893 and the family remained on their homestead there. The Franklin family had taken up homestead land next to the George Trim family, and not far from the Blick family.

While in Colorado, Mary met Henry Blick (1870-1942), a son of Constant de Blieck (1839-1911) and Philomina "Minnie" Blaakman (1849-1919), who immigrated from Holland in 1874. Henry and Mary married in Fort Morgan, Colorado on 08 June 1895. They took up a homestead north of the Franklin homestead, and set up housekeeping near Fort Morgan. There were four children born to them in Fort Morgan: John Henry, born 1897; Charles Elmer, born 1899; Mary Minnie, born 1902; and Roy Albert, born 1907. Henry Blick was a well driller by occupation, but the family decided to follow other Franklin and Blick family to Washington State to engage in the lumber industry. Also weighing on their decision to move, was that Mary's health was failing. The doctor had told the family that the Washington air may be better suited for her. Leaving their homestead in Colorado, the family packed up their household and moved.

Settling in Washington, Henry and Minnie purchased land in Bellingham and began to raise their children. Two years later, Mary and Henry lost their daughter, Mary Minnie, to death in Feb of 1911. Then, Mary died a few months later, in April, at the young age of 34. Henry continued to raise his sons in the Bellingham area, and later married Phebe Shepard.
