Poem composed by Aunt Ethel:

Two Longs and a Short

Many years have gone by
since we answered the call
from the old fashioned phone upon the wall.
It told of sickness, sadness and death,
But it also told us of happiness.
Maybe a party or the preacher coming to call
But always it summoned us
with two longs and a short.

And when we used to call
Our Dad from his work,
Because of something that had happened
To one of our brood.
Mother would go to the old Model T Ford,
And honk two longs and a short.

Soon Dad's old gray head would appear
As he came up over the hill
Hoping for good news, but expecting bad.
He'd hurry home with a heart full of dread
For with a houseful of children so lively and gay
Someone was always getting hurt at their play.
But we always knew Dad would be home soon
When we heard Mother honking
Two longs and a short.

On Saturday night we would go
To the little country town
To see an outdoor show.
Dad would be watching the skies for a cloud.
A little bit of rain, and the old Model T Ford
Would have to be pushed
By eight pairs of hands through the mud,
So Mother and Dad would honk
Two longs and a short.

Soon children from all directions would appear
Seems our lives all revolved
Around Mother and Dad and that familiar sound
Of two longs and a short.

And when our work on earth is finished
And it's time to go home,
And Gabriel is ready to blow his horn,
I'm sure Mother and Dad will step up and say,
Let us call them all home as we did yesterday
With two longs and a short.

Found in the bible of niece Mary Lou Ford.
