Don was the son of Noble Hanford and Ethel Allee. He attended an electrical school and went to work for Watson-Flagg Electric Company in 1952. He later became president of the company. He belonged to the Lynhurst Masonic Lodge, the Shrine, the Gatling Gun Club and the American Legion. He married Judy Duncan in 1949.
