Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, he served in the Mexico War and then engaged in mercantile business. At the start of the Civil War, he organized the 46th Pennsylvania Regiment, and was commissioned Colonel. He was promoted Brigadier General in November, 1862, and served in the Army of the Potomac. He commanded a division in XII Corps in engagements through Virginia and after the fall of Atlanta, he became Chief of Cavalry for the Army of the Tennessee. After the war, he served as superintendent for one of the departments in the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and later as a Postmaster.
