She was orphaned at a young age. Her mother died in 1845, shortly after the birth of her youngest brother, Thomas, and her father, a newpaper publisher, died in 1852, during the yellow fever epidemic.
She and her siblings were separated and sent to live with relatives and a former business partner of her father.
Augustine (ADDISON) CROUCHET died young, at the age of 35. She died the month following the death of her husband, leaving her own young children orphaned.
