He was orphaned at a young age. His mother died shortly after his birh, and his father, a newpaper publisher, died in 1852, during the yellow fever epidemic.

His siblings were separated and went to live with friends and relatives.

Thomas was raised by his maternal uncle, Joachim RICHARD.

Marie Suzanne "Suzette" (MELANCON) GIROUARD ADDISON, a daughter of Joseph Ozeme MELANCON and Emelie/Amelie Carmelite BROUSSARD.
