The Owner of Wm Smith Grubber Co. William was a young inventor and worked for many years coming up with the first level action stump puller. He had 27 copy rights on his equipment and opened his foundry in La Crescent MN.He was the Quarter Master at Ft Snelling for the MN 1st. He married Miss Sarah M. Matchett on 10-24-1866 in Black River Falls WI, daughter of Samuel and Mary Matchett. They Had Three Sons:
Frank Royal Smith born 1-31-1868 in Pine Hill WI, Martin W Smith born 2-17-1869 in Pine Hill WI George Robert Chase Smith born 12-25-1872 in Tomah WI.
Wm and his family lived in Tomah until he was about 50 then came to La Crescent MN to run his Stump Puller business. His sons helped him and worked for the company through the years. He owned alot of real estate in La Crescent where he and his wife lived out their lives. When he died in todays 2016 financial view his estate was worth
over a million so he wasnt doing to bad for himself and his family.
