THE FIELD/FIELDS - family were some of the earliest explorers of Oregon. Grandfather to Harve Fields of Grant County. Harve Fields' father, Thomas Fields, came to the Willamette Valley in 1845 and settled in Linn County. His two oldest boys William and Harve, remained in Ray County, Missouri to settle the family affairs. In 1852, William and Harve came west with one of the first bands of Merino sheep to the Willamette valley.
Harve Fields married Nancy Jane Casner, his cousin, on July 23, 1854. They resided in The Dalles, Oregon, where he operated a ferry between the Washington and Oregon sides of the Columbia River. Around 1870 they moved to Grant County where he bought a ranch between Dayville and Mt. Vernon. Here he raised sheep and cattle. Nancy Fields died on February 21, 1892 and Harve died January 11, 1916. They are both buried in the Fields Cemetery (Moon Creek cemetery) between John Day and Dayville. Fields Peak and Fields Creek are named for this Grant County pioneer. To this couple were born the following three children:
Charles Wesley Fields, born June, 1855 in The Dalles, Oregon. He died at 15 years of age as the result of a farming accident. He is buried at Moon Creek cemetery.
Sarah Alice Fields, born on January 30, 1867 at The Dalles, Oregon. She married Jerome C. Moore of Mt. Vernon. To this couple were born the following children: Albert Orestes; Lewis Sylvester; Elmer Roy; Robert; Willis Everette; Rufus Rosco (Todd); Francis (Mrs. Earl Cummings); Jerome Walter; John Lester; (all deceased) and Saphrona (Sally) Alice Moore Nodine (Mrs. Adrian Nodine) of Mt. Vernon.
Walter Scott Fields, born November 26, 1873 at Mt. Vernon, Oregon. He married Eliza Jane Lucas, daughter of Martin and Anna Walker Lucas, on December 15, 1892. Walter and Eliza (Jenny) lived most of their lives in Grant and Baker counties. Walter raised cattle and sheep on the ranch at Mt. Vernon, and later in life they moved to Canyon City where he managed the Elk Horn Hotel. To this couple were born the following children: Irma Ann (Mrs. John A. Muldrick); Reta Irene (Mrs. Henry Cresap); Zena Fae (Mrs. Bluford Eilerts) all now deceased. Surviving are: Lottie Gertrude (Mrs. Mark Pugh) and Walter Anderson Fields, both of Baker, Oregon.
