A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle, Cumberland County, August 5, 1862, with Co. A, 130th Pa Inf, at the rank of private. Wounded at the battle of Antietam and hospitalized for the remainder of his enlistment, which expired on May 21, 1863.
On June 28, 1907, he entered the Soldiers' Home at Hot Springs, Fall River County, South Dakota, but was discharged at his request just three weeks later.

William David Sterner was born May 19, 1836, the son of John & Ellen Libby Sterner, and died September 27, 1921. He married Agnes Jane Kirk January 15, 1857, in Oquawka, Henderson County, Illinois, and sired Francis E. (b. 11/22/57), Alice (b. 12/07/59), Rosa (b. 01/28/64), Ida M. (b. 02/21/67), Adell (b. 08/30/69), Elsie (b. 02/11/73), Clarence B. (b. 09/21/75), Edith May (b. 03/19/79 - married Lewis Stanton Scalph), and Ralph (b. 06/19/84).
He was 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes and was a plasterer by trade until September 17, 1862, when he took a bullet in the right shoulder at the battle of Antietam. He was hospitalized at Carlisle Barracks and discharged in Harrisburg with his company.
In 1880, he lived in Riverside Township, Fremont County, Iowa, and, in 1890, in Schoolcraft, Madison County, Nebraska. On June 28, 1907, he entered the Soldiers' Home at Hot Springs, Fall River County, South Dakota, but was discharged at his request just 3 weeks later. For the last 20 years of his life and more, his enlarged prostate forced multiple catheterizations each day.
