He owned and operated coal mines for years, including a local mine in Clarence, PA.He lost the sight of his right eye due to a mining accident. In February of 1907 he was elected as Inspector for Snow Shoe East Precinct and in 1908 as Supervisor for both East and West Snow Shoe Township.
