Roberts Gibbons, known to everyone as "Lulu," passed away Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at Huntsville Hospital. Visitation was Thursday, Sept. 9, at Spry-Williams Funeral Home, Florence. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.
Born on March 24, 1928, in Baldwyn, Miss., to Seaborn A. and Susan Almittie Scott Roberts, Lulu moved to Florence in her early 20s. It was here that she met and fell in love with John David "Mickey" Gibbons, whom she married March 11, 1953. Lulu and Mickey shared many passions, including boating, fishing, bowling, dancing, entertaining and thoroughly enjoying life and each other.Although they spent many years in Madison, Ala., Lulu and Mickey frequently returned to their home on Shoals Creek, where Mickey passed away in 1980. For the past 30 years, Lulu has opened her home to multiple generations of family and friends. Her generosity knew no bounds, and hundreds of people have been recipients of her hospitality. She was a member of the Baptist faith. Lulu loved all of her "kids" and never forgot a name, face or personal story. She was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, second mother, hostess and friend who loved her dogs, watching basketball on TV, cooking (especially her special tomato gravy and chicken and dumplings), canning, feeding the turtles and geese on the lake, and making the most of every day she was given. She will never know how many people truly loved her and will miss her dearly.
Lulu will join her husband Mickey and her son, Michael Martin "Mickey II" Gibbons, in death, along with her parents, her sisters, Delilah Roberts Hensley and Cedeira Roberts Gholston, and her brother, Gaston Roberts.
Lulu is survived by her loving daughter, Robbie Eileen Gibbons; devoted niece and nephew, Angela Bryant Hendrix and Bobby Hendrix; special niece, Patricia Bryant Hartley, all of Florence; her sister, Mildred Roberts Griffin; and brother, Voy Roberts, of Baldwyn; and several in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be her great-nephew, Jamie Hartley, Leon Lanford, Greg Thornton, Randy Rollison, Tres Darby, Michael Wynn and Michael Church. Honorary pallbearers are Christopher Wayne Chaney, Bobby Hendrix, Brad Lawson, Craig Applegarth, Eric Rorie, Johnny Geisen, Dicky Walker, Keith Smith and Jimmy Parcus.
Special thanks to Dr. Frank Kelley and the staff of Huntsville Hospital AICU.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pets Are Worth Saving (PAWS), 2701 Mall Road, PMB 277, Florence AL 35630.
